Before and After

What do you love about IconByDesign? What makes the items a great addition to your home?

First and foremost, I love that IconByDesign is an Australian family-run business. I love that they source premium materials and partner with master craftspeople to create furniture for longevity, minus the aspirational price tag. Good for you, and good for the planet.

Can you tell us a bit about your family and how they inspire your design choices?

I have my husband Craig who is everything to me (I hit the jackpot finding him!) and together we have our three beautiful children; two boys and a little girl. We are an active family living by the water; everyone loves their sport, dancing, etc. Between renovating houses, running our family business, school and activities, there really isn't much time left. We never stop! Being by the ocean definitely inspires our home's aesthetic. Being as busy as we are, it's really important to us that the house is clear of clutter, that everything – including the furniture – has a clear purpose.

What attracted you to the sofa, armchairs and rug from IconByDesign and how do they complement your renovation and styling projects?

I loved the quality of the sofa and armchairs. The tones were exactly what I was looking for and I loved the warmth that the solid American oak added. The rug felt very on-trend and I loved that it was made from pure New Zealand wool. I feel that the furniture was made for this room!

What has been the most rewarding aspect of renovating your home on the Northern Beaches? Is there a memorable moment from your renovation journey that stands out?

The whole journey of renovating homes is always rewarding, especially when you're finished. When you're knee-deep into demolition and living in a building site, you always have to remind yourself of why you're doing what you're doing and how incredible the final result will be. You’ve got to think ‘big picture’. It’s always worth the years of hard work.

What advice would you give to someone looking to renovate or redesign their home?

My biggest piece of advice is to work with a good, reliable team. Good tradespeople that see your vision is the most important part, in my experience.

How do you balance your design aesthetic between your home in Australia and your Airbnb in Bali?

Building in Australia and Bali are both very very different experiences. In Australia, we have building codes to work with, but in Bali there are no rules – anything you want to create is possible. Their artisans are very visual and so talented. Having said that, in Australia, we build things to last a lifetime; Bali, not so much! In every place we create, we always want it to feel like an oasis, an escape, as if you were on holiday. No matter where in the world we are, this vision will never change.

How do you incorporate sustainable and Scandinavian-inspired design choices into your projects and how does the quality and design influence your choices?

We are always looking at incorporating sustainable choices into our projects. We want pieces that will last. The houses we design are made to be lived in; the furniture has to be the same, whether it's for our family home or the busyness of an Airbnb property. Having statement-making pieces is always important to me and the solid American oak that IconByDesign uses to craft its furniture definitely makes it a showstopper for me.

Finally, what future projects are you excited about? How do you see IconByDesign fitting into those plans?

Our next project will be renovating our main bedroom, walk-in robe and ensuite, which I'm so excited to get started on! We would love to incorporate some of IconByDesign’s pieces into the sanctuary we have designed. They are a perfect fit for the aesthetic we want to create in that space.Â
