Let’s Talk 2017: Design Trends

It’s hard to believe 2016 has drawn to a close! But as life progresses and we continue to evolve, so do our design tastes. So, here’s a glance what we think will be some design trends to look out for in 2017.

Small Space Living

If 2016 was the year of open plan, 2017 is the year of cozy corners. Don’t take this to mean, however, that minimalism is out! Instead, smaller spaces are calling for flexible furniture that playfully explores compartmentalisation. Think ‘modular and mobile’.

Dark Timbers

In keeping with the theme of ‘cozy corners’ we predict a re-birth for darker wood tones this year. Rich, deep browns as well as the burled wood of the art deco period are going to create a look that allows us to escape outdoors while being warm inside.

At Icon by Design, our Walnut collection (such as our Tobias 9 Drawer Chest in solid walnut) is sure to help you with this trend. Not so into dark furnishings?

Green Theme

Both Dulux and Pantone agree, this year the colour forecast is 50 shades of green. In particular, dark forest-green tones are beginning to dominate the interior design fashion scene. We expect dark green will be used as accent for decorative pieces such as armchairs, sofas and artisan glassware. Paired with tan leathers and light linens, a wintery Scandi setting can be easily created.

Our Franz Armchair in Sage Green takes on the colour trend and works perfectly with the dark timbers mentioned above. Eco-Friendly Materials Terracotta, wood, mixed metals and cork textures are expected to be a significant influence over the design scene.

Eco-Friendly Materials

Terracotta, wood, mixed metals and cork textures are expected to be a significant influence over the design scene. Victoria Redshaw, founder of UK forecasting agency Scarlet Opus, describes our desire for ‘controlled rusticity’ to be inspired by an environmental responsibility to our climate and a love of texture.

Low hang a muted silver lamp in the layered style of Poul Henningsen over one of our Magnus dining tables to be eco-friendly and create ‘controlled rusticity’. These are some of our top predictions for 2017.
