Solid timber dining tables, handcrafted to last

Inspired by Scandinavian and mid-century design principles, our solid timber dining tables are handcrafted in solid American oak and walnut, built to last decades. Every table is made to combine simplicity, elegance, functionality, and durability to create the ideal centrepiece for any dining room. For a softer, more contemporary take on the Scandinavian look, explore our Japandi dining tables.

Dining tables made to last

Nothing compares to solid timber when creating furniture. This means the timber used in the construction is milled directly from felled trees, as opposed to engineered wood products like veneer or particleboard, which are composite materials created by binding wood fibres or strands with adhesives. Solid timber has the same internal structure all the way through, granting it lasting strength and durability. Our solid timber dining tables share this quality, they can easily last decades with minimal care.

Over time, they simply acquire a patina that adds character rather than wear. Because solid timber is a natural material, it has unique properties no two pieces share. Each solid timber dining table will have a distinct tone, grain, and pattern, identical only to the furniture pieces crafted from the same tree. No two tables are identical, even when crafted from the same species.

At IconByDesign, we craft only solid timber dining tables. Each table is designed and created with the same meticulous care, guaranteeing the same high quality. You only need to choose between:

Environmentally friendly timber dining tables

In addition to quality, sustainability is a top priority. IconByDesign's process for crafting timber dining tables was designed to safeguard the planet. First, all of the timber used in the construction comes from sustainably harvested American forests, and we only work with suppliers that commit to minimising their environmental impact.

Second, because our solid timber dining tables are crafted from the best materials, they are durable and long-lasting. There will be no need to replace your dining table in the foreseeable future, unlike many pieces of furniture that use composite materials. This cycle of making, discarding, and replacing low-quality furniture adds to the carbon footprint of the companies that manufacture them, which is not something we subscribe to at IconByDesign.

Third, our timber dining tables are made from natural wood, not engineered materials like veneer or particleboard, which are difficult to reuse, recycle, and can release toxic chemicals into the environment. Our furniture is made to be as good for the planet as it is for your home.

Choose your dining table shape

With IconByDesign's solid timber dining tables, you always get the highest quality of craftsmanship, but we also empower you to design your dining area the way you want it by providing timber dining tables in a variety of shapes.

Round dining room tables

A round dining table is ideal for smaller dining rooms, apartments, and any space where conversation matters as much as the meal. Without sharp corners, round tables make the most of tight corners and encourage a relaxed, shared atmosphere. Our round dining room tables are available in solid American oak or walnut, with sizes suited for 4 to 8 guests.

Oval dining room tables

Oval dining tables combine the softer edges of a round table with the seating capacity of a rectangular one. They work especially well for families who host often, or for long, open-plan rooms where a rectangular piece would feel heavy. Our oval dining room tables are crafted from solid American oak and walnut and seat 6 to 10 comfortably.

Square dining room tables

A square dining table is the natural fit for smaller rooms, studio apartments, or kitchens where floor space is limited. Four equal sides create balance and make every seat feel equally important, ideal for daily family meals. Our square dining room tables are handcrafted in solid timber and designed to comfortably seat 4.

Rectangular dining room tables

A rectangular dining table is the traditional centrepiece of the family dining room. Longer footprints accommodate 6 to 12 guests, making them a natural fit for dinner parties, Sunday lunches, and larger gatherings. Our rectangular dining room tables are available in solid oak and walnut, with extendable options for households that need flexibility across everyday and special occasion use.

Extendable dining tables

If you host often or need a table that adapts across family meals and larger gatherings, an extendable dining table is the most flexible option. Our extendable dining tables open in under a minute with no tools required, and are available in both round and rectangular shapes across oak and walnut. For a dedicated oak range, browse our extendable oak dining tables.

Dining tables by seating capacity

Not sure what size suits your household? Start with how many people you seat most often. Our dining tables are available across five dedicated seating-capacity collections, from compact apartment-friendly tables to large gathering tables that fit the whole family.

For smaller spaces, also browse our dedicated collection of small dining furniture.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best wood for a dining table?

Solid American oak and walnut are both excellent choices for a dining table. Oak offers a lighter hue and distinctive grain, suited to Scandinavian and minimalist interiors. Walnut has a deeper, richer tone with elegant grain patterns, better suited to mid-century and contemporary spaces. Both are naturally durable, resistant to warping, and hold their value over decades.

What shape dining table is best for a small room?

For rooms smaller than 3m x 3m, a round or square dining table is usually the better fit. Round tables have no sharp corners and feel less visually heavy, while square tables make efficient use of corners. If you need flexibility for occasional larger gatherings, consider a round extendable dining table that opens to an oval.

What size dining table do I need?

Allow 60cm of table edge per person seated. A 150cm table seats 4 to 6, a 180cm table seats 6 to 8, and a 210cm+ table seats 8 to 10. Always leave at least 90cm of clearance between the table and any walls or walkways for chairs to pull out comfortably.

What are Scandinavian-style dining tables?

Scandinavian-style dining tables are defined by clean lines, natural timber finishes, and a functional, uncluttered aesthetic. They typically feature light timbers like oak, tapered or splayed legs, and a focus on quality materials over decorative detail. The style grew out of the Nordic design movement of the mid-20th century and prioritises everyday usability alongside timeless design. At IconByDesign, our Scandinavian dining tables are handcrafted in solid American oak and walnut.

How do I care for a solid timber dining table?

Wipe with a soft, damp cloth after meals and use appropriate timber care products for occasional polishing. Avoid harsh chemicals, direct sunlight, and heat sources. Use coasters and placemats for hot or wet items. Solid timber will develop a natural patina over time, which is a feature of the material rather than a flaw.

What is the difference between solid timber and engineered wood?

Solid timber is milled directly from felled trees and has the same internal structure all the way through. Engineered wood products like veneer, MDF, and particleboard are composites made by binding wood fibres or strands with adhesives. Solid timber is more durable, longer-lasting, and easier to repair or refinish. It also does not release the adhesives and chemicals used in engineered alternatives.
