How to cosy up your home for winter

Winter’s on its way. A time for hibernation and hunkering down. For snuggling and self-care. For relaxation and reorganising. And there’s no place like home to do it. It’s time to transform your home into a cosy winter retreat that feels warm and wonderfully welcoming – to yourself, to your family, and to friends who feel like family. After all, these past few months have shown us that home is where the heart is. So sit back with a cuppa in your favourite Olivia armchair and be inspired by these tips and tricks to get your home winter ready.

Living

The easiest way to add warmth to every room? Layers. Take the chill off with soft-to-the-touch blankets, knitted throws, cushions and soft rugs. Try mixing different styles and fabrics for a truly cosy winter retreat: think cocooning, think cosy. To mix layers successfully, try different textures of a similar colour palette, or complementary colours in similar textures.

Create a cosy living area by dressing up your furniture with tactile textures and interesting accessories. Winter is the perfect time to introduce rich tones into your home – try earthy shades of cocoa, burnt orange, paprika, tobacco and terracotta, mixed with navy or forest green for a cool contrast in your cushions and accessories. Throws are comforting, delightfully snuggly and make beautiful decorative pieces when draped over your new Olivia sofa – which colour will you go for?

Set the mood with lighting – turn the lights down low, add warmth and ambience with dimmed lamps and place scented candles on your Magnus coffee table, grab that humongous bowl of popcorn and settle down to watch your favourite flick in front of our Svend or Bastian entertainment units.

Dining Room

Winter is a wonderful time of year to have friends over for an intimate dinner, so switch on that slow cooker and open a bottle of red. Dress your Magnus or Axel dining table with a table runner to let the warmth of the walnut timber shine through. Want to add a bit of colour to your space? Choose our midnight blue or sage green Astrid or Nestor dining chairs. If you’re after some extra cushioning, our newest addition the Stefan comes in denim blue and forest green.

Add linen placemats and napkins and style it with a selection of candles, foliage and flowers. And, when the entertaining is done, store away your beautiful crockery and napery in our Maximus sideboard. Place rugs where you need extra softness and warmth underfoot like beneath your dining table or along the hallway outside your bedroom. It’s time to celebrate life and all its magical moments.

Bedroom

Winter is the perfect excuse to catch up on some well-earned rest and relaxation, so why not indulge in a weekend of hibernation? Lie in, eat breakfast in bed, curl up with a compelling book or watch an entire box set. To make your winter bedroom truly blissful, start with upping the cosy factor. Dress up your Anya or Jolanda bed in natural linen; a warm palette of navy, ochre and rust are perfect for a bed you’ll want to stay in all day. Both of these beds come with matching bedside tables and chest of drawers.

Swap your light blanket for a heavier doona. A chunky knitted throw will not only add a textural element to your bedroom, but is an extra layer when the temperature dips. Don’t forget a soft woolen rug at the foot of the bed so that your feet have a soft place to land when you finally arise.

Storage

Store those winter woollens and blankets in our Arne tallboy or chest of drawers in your bedroom. If you’re working from home and need extra storage for paperwork and office paraphernalia, how about the Tobias chest, available in 3 sizes? For something more compact, one of our Jorgen sideboards is just the ticket.

We hope these tips to cosy up your home for winter will be just the inspiration you need to create your own winter haven for the cooler months ahead!
