Q&A with our Sydney Interior Design - Thannya

Your home should be a reflection of you – a place where you can be yourself for work and for rest. But where do you start? How do you create a space that seamlessly blends form and functionality? Luckily for you, our Design Team is here to help. We chat with our Sydney Interior Designer, Thannya, who gives us her tips and tricks for making your dream home a reality.

Tell us about yourself. How and why did you become an interior designer?

I started my career in nursing, but decided to study Architecture and Interior Design as a postgraduate course when I realised it was my true calling.

I come from a large family that’s built on foundations of love and support for each other. This, in turn, taught me a lot about caring for my clients and bringing people together.

My job as an interior designer allows me to meet a diverse range of people in different places. I love the process of encapsulating people's ideas to transform their homes and make their dreams come true. Travelling has also helped me open my mind to new concepts and innovations that I use in my designs.

Do you have any tips for someone wanting to create a minimalist, Scandinavian-inspired home?

Here are my top tips:

Less is more: Scandinavian design emphasises spaces that are bright, light and open.

Choose quality furniture: Invest in timeless pieces crafted from solid wood that blend quality, practicality and style.

Incorporate natural elements: Breathe life into your home and bring a touch of greenery into it with pot plants.

Contrast different textures, colours, etc: To create interesting focal  points, contrast dark and light colours, new and old furniture and accessories that have varying textures.

What is your favourite colour palette?

I love a grey colour palette which can range from warm to cool tones. When I need a little bit of colour, I add green tones or a bit of greenery to bring life to the place.

What interior design trends have you noticed recently that will endure beyond 2022?

I believe people will come to realise the importance of having a close connection with nature. Natural materials such as solid dark timbers, curved lines in design and feature walls are trends that took off in 2022 and will stay for a long time to come.

What is your favourite Icon By Design project and why?

R: All my projects are special. However, one in particular touched my heart. I met a lovely family who was frustrated with their home renovation and the unexpected problems that beset it. When I talked with them initially, they were very stressed. Once I started to work with them and present them with project ideas, they found hope. Today, they are very happy with the project and their forever home that I helped bring together.
