Solid American oak and walnut are both excellent choices. Oak is lighter, with a distinctive grain that suits Scandinavian, minimalist, and coastal interiors. Walnut has a deeper, richer tone with elegant grain patterns, better suited to mid-century and contemporary spaces. Both are naturally durable, resist warping, and develop character over time.
IconByDesign specialises in Scandinavian and mid-century modern living room furniture. Scandinavian pieces feature clean lines, pale timbers, and minimal ornamentation. Mid-century pieces have softer curves, tapered legs, and richer timber tones like walnut. We also offer Japandi (a Scandinavian and Japanese hybrid) and minimalist ranges.
As a rough guide, measure the longest wall in your room and allow for at least 60cm of clear space at either end. For rooms under 4m wide, a 2-seater or 3-seater sofa usually fits best. For larger rooms, a 4-seater, 6-seater, or modular configuration gives you more flexibility. Leave at least 45cm between the sofa and the coffee table for comfortable leg space.
Wipe with a soft, damp cloth as needed and use a dedicated timber care product for occasional polishing. Avoid harsh chemicals, direct sunlight, and proximity to heaters or fireplaces, which can dry the timber over time. Solid timber develops a natural patina with use, which deepens the character of the piece rather than damaging it.
